all not与not all的辨析

    这是一个有争议的问题。

    一、《牛津英语用法指南》第三版认为：“如果动词是否定的，一般不用 all + 名词作主语 ( 例如：All Americans don't like hamburgers.)。我们更常用 not all + 名词 + 肯定动词。 Not all Americans like hamburgers. 并不是所有美国人都喜欢汉堡包。 Not all birds can fly. 不是所有的鸟都会飞。”

    二、认为“如果动词是否定的，也可以用 all + 名词作主语”表示部分否定的例句：

    Someday all cars won't make noise. （摘自《薄冰英语用法问答1144例》p.271）

    All Americans don't like hamburgers.( =  Not all Americans like hamburgers.)（摘自章振邦主编：《新编高级英语用法》p.438）这里的 not 表示部分否定。

    章振邦在《新编高级英语用法》p.439 指出，在一些谚语中，all ... not 都表示部分否定：All that glitters is not gold .(= Not all that glitters is gold .)（闪烁发光的未必都是黄金。）All are not friends that speak us fair .（尽说好话的未必都是朋友。）All are not hunters that blow the horn .(吹号角的未必都是猎人。意谓“高谈阔论者未必真有学问。”) All is not butter that comes from the cow. （出身高贵者未必都是精英。）All bread is not baked in one oven .（各有所长，不能强求一致。）

    三、认为“如果动词是否定的，也可以用 all + 名词作主语”，可能表示部分否定，也可能表示全部否定，应该根据上下文从逻辑思维来确定具体含义。如果抛开上下文或者不作逻辑分析，可能有两种含义。例如：

    1. All the soldiers didn't know how to fight .(1)= None of the soldiers know how to fight . 所有的士兵都不会打仗。(2) = Not all the soldiers know how to fight . 并非所有的士兵都会打仗。（摘自章振邦主编：《新编高级英语用法》p.439）

    2. All the children didn't sleep. (1) = All the children failed to sleep .或 None of the children slept . 所有的孩子都没有睡着。（2）= Not all the children slept .并非所有的孩子都睡着了。（摘自赵振才编者：《英语常见问题解答大词典》 all ... not）

   3. All civilized people can't be cannibals . 【译文】（1）（所有的）文明人是不可能吃人肉的。（正确）（2）并非所有的文明人都是能吃人肉的。（错误）（同上）
